International

Join a diverse student population in a beautiful campus setting at Eastern Kentucky University.  Students are considered international applicants if they are not citizens of the United States.  

How to apply as an international student:

  • Complete the EKU International Application for Admission and declare a major;
  • Submit payment for the $35 processing fee;
  • Submit all official secondary school records -- cumulative average of 70% (2.0) or higher;
  • Submit declaration of finances showing a balance of $29,000 USD in the form of a bank statement or bank letter;
  • Letter of Support -- to be completed by account holder;
  • Submit official college transcript via mail (transfer students only);
  • University level courses taken at institutions outside of the U.S. must be evaluated by an outside agency (either World Education Services or JSilny and Associates.

English Language Requirements

  • Submit official TOEFL scores (Minimum Score 500 {paper}, 173 {computer} or 61 {internet}.
  • OR IELTS test – students must have a 6.0 overall and at least 5.0 or above in all remaining categories of the IELTS test.
  • Japanese students may take the EIKEN test with a passing score of Pre-1 as sufficient credit.
  • Students may complete the equivalent of college level English 101 and English 102 at an equally accredited institution as EKU with a C or better or submit ACT or SAT scores with reading and English scores at the levels of Standard Full Admission.

Intensive English Instruction @ EKU 

  • EKU partners with ELS Educational Services (ELS) to provide conditional admission for students who are academically qualified, but who do not meet our English Language proficiency requirements at the time of application to the university. We accept proof of completion of ELS Language Center’s intensive English for Academic Purposes Level 112 as satisfying the requirements for English proficiency for many all degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • For more than 50 years ELS Language Centers have helped hundreds of thousands of students from over 150 countries around the world learn English.  The Richmond ELS Language Center is centrally located on EKU’s Main Campus.  Students receive regular visits from EKU Admission to helps students transition from ELS to EKU.  To learn more about this program, start dates, and to apply, visit the ELS Richmond Language Center.

Scholarship Opportunities for International Students

Undergraduate Freshman Students

International Academic Achievement - $2,500

  • TOEFL scores of 65 (IELTS 6.5)
  • Secondary school cumulative scores of 80% (3.0) or higher

International Academic Excellence - $5,000

  • TOEFL scores of 65 (IELTS 6.5)
  • Secondary school cumulative scores of 85% (3.5) or higher

*Awarded annually. Recipients must successfully complete 15 hours per semester to retain the scholarship. Not available to students under government contracts. Subject to availability of funds.

ESL Academic Achievement - $2,500

  • ELS students who complete ELS 112 within 12 months
  • Secondary school cumulative scores of 80% (3.0) or higher

ESL Academic Excellence - $5,000

  • ELS students who complete ELS levels 110-112 with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

*Awarded annually. Recipients must successfully complete 15 hours per semester to retain the scholarship.
