Looking to go away for college? The SMART (Selective Merit Aid/Reduced Tuition) program offers eligible undergraduate students an amazing opportunity:
Attend EKU for less than attending many schools in your home state.
$10,000 Annual Tuition
For new undergraduates entering EKU in the fall of 2018, the SMART Program will save them over $8,000 off annual out-of-state tuition costs. Students from SMART-designated states who have a high school GPA of 2.5 and an ACT composite of 18 or SAT total of 940 or higher will be charged a tuition of $5,000 per semester ($10,000 per year).
Qualified transfer students whose home of record (residency) is one of the SMART states may transfer to EKU and participate in the SMART program. Transfer students receiving the SMART Rate are not eligible for other transfer scholarships but may qualify for federal aid as well as departmental scholarships and foundation scholarships offered by EKU.
When combined with EKU's very affordable housing rates and meal plans, students will discover that EKU's total cost of attendance is likely less expensive than choosing to stay in-state, allowing them to go away for college while paying less. EKU offers a high-quality residential educational experience that is second to none!
What states qualify for SMART Program?
To be eligible for the SMART program, students must reside in one of the following states: Alabama, Florida*, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Michigan, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, DC or West Virginia.
*Effective Fall 2019
Are there academic requirements?
You need to graduate high school with a minimum of a 2.5 cumulative, unweighted Grade Point Average (GPA) and have an 18 composite ACT score or a total SAT score of 940. For students transferring from another regionally accredited college or university a minimum of 24 credits (earned beyond high school graduation) with a college GPA of 2.5 or above is required.
Are there limitations to SMART?
SMART is not available to fully online students.
How long does the SMART Program last?
As long as you maintain a college GPA of 2.5 and stay enrolled as a full-time student each semester, you will be eligible for SMART. You must remain continuously enrolled (Fall and Spring semesters) at EKU until you complete your first undergraduate degree. If you qualify for and accept a merit scholarship associated with SMART (see below), the scholarship portion will expire after 8 consecutive semesters (Fall and Spring).
What other financial aid is offered?
New first-time freshmen eligible for SMART who have superior academic records may be eligible for one of two additional scholarship opportunities. Students with a composite ACT score of 29 or higher (SAT 1310 total or higher) may earn an additional merit scholarship award (unweighted GPA must be above 3.0 to be considered). Priority is given to students who have applied to EKU by February 1. After February 1, the Scholarship Office will make awards until funds are exhausted. Apply early!
